Background
Dr. Chuck Zhang is the Harold E. Smalley Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. He is also an affiliated faculty member of Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute. He serves as the Director of a newly established NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC) for Composite and Hybrid Materials Interfacing (CHMI). Prior to joining Georgia Tech, he served as Professor and Chair in the Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering and the Deputy Director of the High-Performance Materials Institute at the Florida State University.
Dr. Zhang’s research interests include additive manufacturing (3D printing and printed electronics), scalable bio-/nano-manufacturing, advanced composite structures manufacturing and maintenance, and manufacturing cybersecurity. Most recently, he leads the 3-university (Georgia Tech (Lead), Oakland University and University of Tennessee/Knoxville) NSF CHMI IUCRC Center on developing advanced materials, manufacturing and data science techniques and tools for composite and hybrid materials joining/bonding and repair. As PI and Co-PI, Dr. Zhang has led or conducted over 60 research projects (totaling more than $22 Million) sponsored by federal agencies including National Science Foundation, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Department of Defense, Food and Drug Administration and Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as industrial companies and foundations such as ATK, Cummins, Delta Air Lines, General Dynamics, Hexcel, Lockheed Martin, Marcus Foundation, Raytheon, Solvay, and Top Flight. He has published over 210 refereed journal articles. He also holds 27 U.S. patents.
Dr. Zhang serves as an editor of Composites Part B: Engineering, a top international journal in the field of composite science and engineering (with an impact factor of 11.32 (2022)). He is also a Department Editor for the Design and Manufacturing Focus Issue of IISE Transactions, the flagship journal of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE). Dr. Zhang received various awards for his research and teaching, including the Honorable Mention for the Best Application Paper in the 2020 IISE Transactions Focus Issue on Quality and Reliability Engineering (2021), R&D 100 Award for “3D Printed Patient-Specific Tissue-Mimicking Phantoms” by R&D Magazine (2018), TechConnect Innovation Award for “3D Printed Meta-material Tissue-Mimicking Phantoms” by TechConnect (2018), IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering Best Paper Award (2018), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award (2001), and Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award (1999). He is a Fellow of IISE.
